How does a food brick filler work?

Product: milk, fruit juice, soup…

Brick fillers are machines used in packaging lines to package liquid products in carton packages (bricks).

These machines are used in industry with food and/or dairy products. Milk or juice cartons are leakproof paper containers for retail distribution. They are easily recyclable. Common items in supermarkets, they are often found in homes. However, this primary packaging carton is a precision product, manufactured according to rigorous standards.

1 – Forming

The bricks are formed from a cardboard reel. They are loaded at the front of the machine into the storage magazine. The forming and sealing of the sides and bottom, for carton sealing, are carried out by the machine.

There are different packaging formats available. The Tetra pak brand is known for the reliability and quality of its machines and packaging (tetra brik slim / base / edge, tetra rex, tetra top, tetra prisma, gemina, wedge, fino, stelo, …).

2 – Filling

In a second step, filling is carried out using a pre-measured quantity of product which is then released through a spout into the carton.

3 – Sealing

Sealing is from the top. The sealing machine is lowered onto the carton and pinches the carton strips to close the package. Depending on the machine, different opening systems can be applied via modules:

Straw perforator/applicator

UHT treatment and aseptic machines

Filling stations are sometimes equipped with an ultra-heat treatment module called UHT treatment. Ultra-high temperature treatment or ultra-pasteurization is a food processing technology that sterilizes liquid foods. These will therefore be edible and risk-free.

An aseptic carton filler performs the forming, filling and sealing of the packages.
